Find the bag for your body type

We are always finding reasons to get a new bag. This time, we have the most valid reason for you to get a new bag. It’s the beginning of a new year, and time for a fresh start. You have been suffering with a bag that complements your body shape poorly for the past year and this year, you are determined to shrug of this ill-fitting asset.

But before you jump the gun by snapping up the first bag you fall in love with, here’s a cold hard truth. Love at first sight rarely ends well when it comes to choosing your shoulder mate.

Choosing the right bag for yourself is not only about what your eyes fall in love with. It is equally important to choose a bag that fits your size, height and shape. Many do not realise that a bag can cause as much an impact on your appearance as a pair of jeans.

Here are some common types of bags that you may have come across. Each offers the wearer a different property. There are shoulder bags, clutches, handbags, totes, messenger bags, crossbodies and backpacks, just to name a few. Each bag type comes in many different shapes, size and designs.

Contrary to what most people think, choosing the right bag is not as simple as categorizing people into petite, tall and curvy. A bag that fits a tall and curvy woman may not fit a tall and slim woman.

Before you go on your hunt for the perfect bag, arm yourself with this list of considerations that we have provided below for you.

Wide and slouchy bags make a person’s frame appear wider and curvier. Examples of such bags are hobos and bowler bags. A straight, angular and structured bag will streamline a person’s frame. Totes and messenger bags are a good example. When in doubt, always opt for a bag that is the complete opposite of your frame.

Always select a bag that is proportionate to your body size. If you are petite, avoid overwhelmingly large bags that may swallow you up. Small to medium-sized bags are fine. For tall ladies, you may choose to avoid tiny bags like mini clutches or mini crossbodies as they could make you look like a giant in comparison to your miniature girl pouch.

Shoulder Strap/Handle Drop

You may not think it, but the length of your shoulder strap plays a huge part in your appearance as well. Remember that long shoulder straps can make your legs appear shorter, while shorter straps can lengthen the physical appearance of your limbs.

Body Proportion

If you are top heavy, it is advisable to wear your bag below your torso, so as to make your body look well proportioned. Likewise if you are bottom heavy, you will do well to let your bag hang just before your hips, to accentuate your full body curves.

Patterns and Prints

Patterns and prints give the illusion of size and curves. Take advantage of patterns and prints if you have a slim build. If you have curvier build, you may opt for plain and solid designs and colours.
