1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Mel and I’ve been blogging for about 10 years now. Being online and being able to connect with new people are a couple of my favorite things about it and what keeps me going in the day.
I’m also a tech geek and work full time in the tech world. I believe that inspiration is behind every corner, every step, and every person we come across if our minds are open to seeing it; and my blog is about chasing and finding that inspiration every day.
2. Where’s your favorite hangout in your city?
Toronto is full of such incredible diversity. I like exploring a different area as much as possible, but if I had to choose, my favorite place to hang out is in the Queen and Dundas West area.
You’ll always find the best coffee shops, boutiques, parks, and cool local businesses there. There’s so much to explore and even though I’ve grown up here my whole life, I feel like I still haven’t explored the area enough.
3. Who was your first style icon?
My first style icon was definitely Anna Wintour, mostly for her forward-thinking presence as a power woman, which was definitely ahead of her time.
Since then, we’ve seen so many girl bosses come to the forefront, but I would say she was one of the first powerhouses to really pave the path. And her style, no matter what she wore, always reflected this.
4. What has changed the most in your life since you started fashion blogging?
People. The number of incredible people I’ve met – partners, fellow partners, and brands – is probably the biggest (and most amazing) change in my life since starting my blog. The opportunities to meet so many inspiring people are abundant now and it’s also the thing about blogging I’m the most grateful for.
5. What is the go-to outfit that never fails you?
There’s nothing like a good tunic dress. It’s comfy, versatile, and oh so effortless. Other than that, a good pair of ripped black jeans and white t-shirt are my way to go. I like to wear pretty simple outfits most of the time and invest in my accessories (bags and shoes mostly) to make a statement.
6. What are some of your favorite designer brands and why?
YSL is by far my favorite brand right now. I think it’s because to me, YSL has always spoke to a strong and bold woman. She’s not afraid of society and she also speaks her mind. YSL was one of the firsts to put women in a suit and I love that message. Chanel will always be a classic favorite, but I’m also in love with Céline for its gorgeous minimalistic simplicity.
7. Have you ever encountered a fashion trend that you do not approve of?
Never. I believe that fashion is about self-expression. Whether it’s a trend or not, if you want to wear something, you should 100% wear it. Fashion is personal and so is style, and everyone’s personal decisions to adopt or not adopt any trend is their own. I respect that.
8. What are your fashion pet peeves and why?
My biggest pet peeve is when people criticize other people’s sense of style. I’m a huge proponent of fashion and style as an art, whether you’re a designer or an off-the-rack purchaser. Clothing and the way we dress should be fun and expressive, not limiting and stifling.
9. Your strong relationship with Dave since you were 18 is the cause of envy for many. What kind of role does he play in your career as a fashion blogger?
Dave and I have been together for a very long time indeed. The truth is that he’s probably the single most critical part of my career as a blogger. He was a full-time photographer for a long time but now produces 99% of all my content. I wouldn’t be producing content nearly as good if it weren’t for him. He’s my best friend, my biggest supporter, and just as much the face behind Mel Inspired as I am; I’m grateful every day that I have such an incredible partner-in-crime.
